The Burroughs Legacy Project
The Burroughs Legacy Project is based at the Invisible Institute, not far from where Dr. Burroughs co-established and sustained the South Side Community Art Center and the DuSable Museum of African-American History (founded in her living room in 1961). The Burroughs Legacy Project aligns with the Invisible Institute’s mission by centering the narratives of formerly and currently incarcerated Chicagoans; it also broadens our commitment to immersive engagement by supporting the ongoing critical inquiry of young people, enhancing their media literacy, and amplifying their concerns, their insights, and their skills as interlocutors.
In addition to conducting rounds of interviews, the Burroughs Legacy team has learned a great deal from the BLP narrators' artistic expressions, reading their memoirs, personal essays, and poetry, and seeing them onstage with their work. We’ve also experienced and made art together, co-hosting events in honor of Dr. Burroughs’ birthday at Prison + Neighborhood Arts/Education Project (P+NAP)’s Walls Turned Sideways community space, the Hyde Park Art Center and UChicago’s Logan Center.
